The Internet in 1996: Finding Your Way Before Google
It was 1996—no Google, no instant search results. So how did you find anything on the Internet? You looked it up in the Yellow Pages, of course! Someone had to put that together, and that task fell to my co-author, Rick Stout, and me.
Simple enough, right? Just find a science or technology website, learn all about it, and write a sharp, engaging description. Then repeat… hundreds and hundreds of times. Before long, what seemed like a straightforward project turned into a serious writing marathon.
To stay sane while assembling this sci-tech site catalog, we leaned into humor and creativity, making the process as fun as possible. Despite the workload, writing with Rick was an absolute blast. You can find more details on my IYP:SRT website.
Rick, by the way, also co-wrote the original Internet Yellow Pages with Harley Hahn. Here’s a signed inscription from a copy they gave me—blush.
